How is CTR calculated?
CTR is clicks divided by impressions, shown as a percentage. Google Search Console defines it exactly this way and reports it for every query, page, country and device.
An impression is counted when your link appears on the results page someone is looking at. A click is counted when someone follows that link to your site. Clicking the same link twice in one visit counts once.
Why does CTR matter?
CTR tells you whether people who see your result actually choose it. Two pages with the same ranking can earn very different traffic because one has a clearer title or a more useful snippet.
Position has the biggest effect. In Backlinko’s study of four million Google results, the first organic result averaged a 27.6% CTR, and the top three results took 54.4% of all clicks. Moving up one spot raised CTR by 32.3% on average.
What does a CTR problem look like?
Compare the CTR of pages that rank in similar positions. One that sits well below its neighbours is worth a closer look.
| Page | Average position | Impressions | Clicks | CTR |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| /pricing-guide | 3.1 | 4,000 | 420 | 10.5% |
| /setup-checklist | 3.4 | 3,800 | 95 | 2.5% |
| /beginners-guide | 8.9 | 2,100 | 48 | 2.3% |
How do you improve CTR?
Make the result itself more useful and more specific to the search. Common changes are:
- Rewrite the title tag so it matches the words people search with and promises a clear answer.
- Write a meta description that summarises what the page gives the reader.
- Add schema markup where it fits, so the result can show extra detail such as FAQs or ratings.
- Show a current date when the content has been genuinely updated.
- Check the page matches the search intent, because a mismatched page rarely earns the click.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good CTR?
There is no single good number, because CTR depends heavily on position and on what else appears on the page. Compare a page with others at a similar position on your own site rather than with an industry average.
Why is my CTR low even though I rank well?
Ads, AI Overviews, featured snippets and other features can push your result down the screen and answer the question before anyone scrolls. A weak title or a page that does not match the search can also lower it.
Does CTR affect rankings?
Google does not publish CTR as a ranking factor, and the evidence is debated. It is still worth improving, because more clicks at the same ranking means more visitors.
Why does site-wide CTR drop when impressions grow?
When a site starts to appear for many new searches at low positions, impressions rise faster than clicks. Overall CTR falls even though nothing has got worse.
