Impressions

Definition

Impressions are the number of times a link to your site appeared in search results, whether or not anyone clicked it. In Google Search Console, a result usually counts as an impression when it is on the results page being viewed, even if it was not scrolled into view.

What counts as an impression?

An impression is counted when your link appears on the current page of results. According to Google, the searcher does not have to scroll down to it for it to count.

There are exceptions. Inside carousels and expandable sections, the item usually has to be scrolled or opened into view. Results on page two only count if the searcher goes to page two.

Why do impressions matter?

Impressions show demand and visibility before clicks arrive. A page that gains impressions is being shown for more searches, often an early sign that rankings are improving.

They also give context to every other metric. CTR is clicks divided by impressions, so you cannot judge clicks properly without them.

How do you read impressions alongside other metrics?

Look at impressions together with clicks and position, because each combination tells a different story.

PatternWhat it usually means
High impressions, few clicks, position 11 to 20The page is close to page one and may need a focused update.
High impressions, few clicks, top three positionThe title or snippet may not be persuading people, or other features answer the query.
Impressions falling over monthsThe page may be losing rankings to newer or better content.
Impressions rising, clicks flatThe page is appearing for new, lower-ranked searches.

How are impressions counted by page and by site?

Search Console can group data by property or by page, and the totals differ. If one result shows five links to your site, it counts as one impression for the whole property but as one impression for each of the five pages.

This is why the page totals in the Pages tab can add up to more than the property total.

Frequently asked questions

Does an impression mean someone saw my result?

Not always. An impression means your link was on the results page that loaded. The searcher may never have scrolled far enough to see it.

Why do impressions go up while clicks stay the same?

Usually because the page has started to appear for extra searches at low positions, where few people click. It is often a good sign that more growth may follow.

Do AI Overviews count as impressions?

Yes. Google says links shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the overall Search Console traffic data under the Web search type.

How far back can I see impressions?

The Search Console Performance report shows the last three months by default, and you can change the date range. The newest data is preliminary and can change for a few hours.
