AI citation

Definition

An AI citation is a link to your page that an AI assistant shows as a source for its answer, in tools such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews. It is stronger than a brand mention because it credits your page and gives readers a way to click through.

What counts as an AI citation?

A citation is any link to your site that an AI answer presents as a source, whether inline, as a numbered footnote or in a list of sources beside the answer. A brand mention, where the AI names you without linking, is related but weaker.

Why do AI citations matter?

They are one of the few ways an AI answer can send you visitors. Clicks are scarce: in a Pew Research Center study, people clicked a link inside Google’s AI summary on just 1% of visits where one appeared. A citation will not always bring a click, but without one there is nothing to click.

Citations also signal that an engine treats your page as trustworthy for the topic, which tends to carry over to related questions.

How do you earn more AI citations?

Make your pages easy to find, easy to quote and worth trusting.

  • Allow the relevant crawlers. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
  • Make sure pages are indexed in Google, since AI Overviews only link to indexed pages eligible for a snippet.
  • Lead with a direct answer, then support it.
  • Include specific statistics, quotations and named sources. These gave the largest gains in the original GEO research.
  • Keep facts and dates current.

How do you track AI citations?

Ask a fixed set of questions in each engine on a schedule and record which sources are linked. Because answers vary between runs, look at the share of runs that cite you over time rather than a single result.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI citation the same as a backlink?

No. A backlink is a permanent link on another website. An AI citation appears in a generated answer and may change the next time the question is asked.

Can I see AI citations in Google Search Console?

Partly. Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in your overall Search Console traffic, but they are not shown separately. Other engines need their own tracking.

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT citing me?

Not by itself. OpenAI uses GPTBot for model training and OAI-SearchBot for search. You can block one and allow the other.

Why does an AI cite me for one question but not a similar one?

Engines often run several searches behind one answer and pick sources per question. Small changes in wording can change which pages are found and chosen.
