Citation gap

Definition

A citation gap is a question where AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews cite your competitors as sources but do not cite you. It is the AI search version of a content gap, and it shows you exactly where to improve or create pages.

What is a citation gap?

It is a specific prompt, asked in a specific AI engine, where at least one competitor is linked as a source and your site is not. The gap can exist because you have no page on the topic, or because you have a page the engine does not choose.

Why do citation gaps matter?

Each gap is a place where someone asking a question in your market is pointed at a competitor instead of you. AI engines usually show only a handful of sources per answer, so being left out of that short list is a bigger loss than slipping a few places in a list of ten results.

Gaps are also practical. They come with a ready-made brief: the question, the engine, and the pages that won.

How do you find citation gaps?

  1. 1Write a list of the questions your customers ask, in their own words.
  2. 2Ask each question in the AI engines you care about, ideally more than once, since answers vary.
  3. 3Record every cited source, and note which belong to you and which to competitors.
  4. 4Mark each question where a competitor is cited and you are not.
  5. 5Sort the gaps by how valuable the question is to your business.

What does a citation gap report look like?

Rows one and three are citation gaps. Row four is not a gap against competitors, but it may be an open opportunity.

How do you close a citation gap?

Study the pages that were cited, then make yours a better source for that exact question.

  • If you have no page on the topic, create one that answers the question directly.
  • If you have a page, put the answer in the first sentence or two.
  • Add specific facts, figures and named sources the cited pages have and yours lacks.
  • Check the page is crawlable by the engine’s search crawler and indexed by Google.
  • Ask the same question again after a few weeks to see if anything changed.

Frequently asked questions

How is a citation gap different from a content gap?

A content gap is a topic competitors rank for in normal search that you have no page about. A citation gap is about AI answers, and you can have one even when you already have a good page on the topic.

Why does a gap appear in one engine but not another?

Each engine searches and picks sources in its own way. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google each use different indexes and ranking, so the same page can be cited by one and ignored by another.

How often should I check for citation gaps?

Monthly is a reasonable starting point for most small sites. AI answers change often, so a single check is a snapshot, not a verdict.

Does a brand mention without a link close the gap?

Partly. Being named is better than nothing, but a citation links readers to your page and is the stronger result.
