What is prompt tracking?
It is a repeatable measurement. You pick the prompts that matter to your business, run them in each engine on a schedule, and store the answers and their sources. Comparing runs shows whether you are being cited more or less often, and for which questions.
Why can’t you just check once?
AI answers are not fixed. The same question can produce different wording and different sources from one run to the next, and engines change their models and search systems over time.
Google also notes that AI Overviews and AI Mode may run several related searches behind a single question, so small changes in what gets found can change the answer. A single check is a snapshot; tracking shows the trend.
How do you set up prompt tracking?
- 1Write 20 to 50 prompts in the words your customers actually use, covering comparisons, how-to questions and problems you solve.
- 2Choose the engines that matter to your audience.
- 3Run each prompt on the same schedule, such as weekly, ideally several times per run.
- 4Record whether you are mentioned, whether you are cited, and which competitors appear.
- 5Review the trend monthly and link changes to the pages you updated.
What does prompt tracking data look like?
The third row shows why one check is not enough: a single absent week is often noise rather than a real drop.
| Prompt | Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| best budget standing desk | Mentioned | Cited | Cited | Cited |
| standing desk for small spaces | Absent | Absent | Mentioned | Cited |
| are standing desks worth it | Cited | Absent | Cited | Cited |
Frequently asked questions
How is prompt tracking different from rank tracking?
Rank tracking records a page’s position in a list of results. Prompt tracking records whether you appear at all in a written answer, and whether you are linked or just named.
Should I use logged-in or logged-out results?
Logged-out or clean sessions are better for tracking, because personal history and memory can change what an assistant says. Keep the setup the same every time.
How often should prompts be run?
Weekly suits most small sites. Running each prompt a few times per check helps smooth out run-to-run variation.
Can I change my prompt list later?
Yes, but changes break comparisons with past data. Add new prompts alongside the old ones rather than swapping them out.
