Rank tracking

Definition

Rank tracking is recording where your pages appear in search results for a set of searches, over time. It shows which pages are rising or falling, so you can see the effect of changes and spot problems early.

How does rank tracking work?

There are two common methods. The first uses Google Search Console, which reports an average position for every query your site appears for, based on real searches.

The second uses a rank tracking tool that runs chosen searches on a schedule, from a set location and device, and records where your pages appear. This gives a single, repeatable snapshot rather than an average.

Why does rank tracking matter?

Small moves in position make large differences to traffic. In Backlinko’s study of four million results, moving up one position raised CTR by 32.3% on average, and going from second to first brought 74.5% more clicks.

Tracking also tells you whether an update worked, and warns you when a page starts to slip before traffic falls far.

What does a rank tracking report look like?

A simple weekly view of a handful of searches is enough for most small sites.

How do you set up useful rank tracking?

  1. 1Choose a focused list of searches that matter to your business, not every keyword you can find.
  2. 2Note which page you want to rank for each one.
  3. 3Track the location and device your customers actually use.
  4. 4Check weekly or monthly, and look at trends over several weeks rather than daily swings.
  5. 5Record what you changed on a page and when, so you can link changes to movement.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my rank tracker disagree with Search Console?

Search Console averages your position across every real search, device and location. A tracker records one search from one place at one time, so the two numbers measure different things.

How often should I check rankings?

Weekly is enough for most sites. Rankings move a little every day, and reacting to daily changes usually leads to changes that are not needed.

What does average position mean in Search Console?

It is roughly where your link was seen on the page, relative to other results. Google uses the topmost position your site held in each search, then averages it.

Should I track AI answers as well as rankings?

If AI assistants answer many of the questions in your space, yes. Rankings do not show whether you are cited in AI answers, so many teams track both.
