How is organic traffic measured?
Analytics tools sort visits into channels based on where they came from. In Google Analytics 4, a visit counts as Organic Search when its source is a known search engine or its medium is set to organic. Visits from search ads go to Paid Search instead.
Google Search Console measures the same traffic from the search side. Its clicks figure counts people who clicked through from Google Search to your site.
Why do Search Console clicks and Analytics sessions differ?
The two tools count different things, so the numbers rarely match exactly. The main reasons are:
- Search Console counts clicks. Analytics counts sessions, which only start once the page loads and the tracking code runs.
- Visitors who block cookies or tracking may not appear in Analytics at all.
- Analytics includes other search engines such as Bing, while Search Console covers Google only.
- The two tools can use different time zones and different rules for what counts as a visit.
What does an organic traffic breakdown look like?
Splitting organic traffic by page shows which content actually brings people in.
| Page | Organic sessions a month | Share of organic |
|---|---|---|
| /guides/cold-brew-ratio | 2,150 | 43% |
| /guides/grind-size-chart | 1,200 | 24% |
| /blog/best-beans-for-espresso | 650 | 13% |
| All other pages | 1,000 | 20% |
How do you grow organic traffic?
Grow the number of searches you appear for and the share of people who click. The usual levers are:
- Make sure your important pages are indexed.
- Update pages that rank just off page one so they move up.
- Improve titles and descriptions on pages with a low CTR.
- Publish pages for relevant topics your site does not yet cover.
- Refresh pages that are losing traffic because they have gone stale.
Frequently asked questions
Is organic traffic free?
You do not pay per click, but it is not free to earn. Writing, updating and maintaining pages takes time or money.
Does traffic from AI Overviews count as organic?
Clicks from Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in Search Console’s overall Web search data, so they count alongside other organic clicks there.
What is the difference between organic and direct traffic?
Organic traffic comes from search results. Direct traffic has no known source, such as someone typing your address or using a bookmark.
Why did my organic traffic drop?
Common causes are lost rankings, pages dropping out of the index, seasonal demand, tracking changes, or more search features answering the question on the results page.
